WordPress.com vs WordPress.org – With Advantages and Disadvantages

WordPress.com vs WordPress.org

Do you want to know which platform is the best for you?

If so, you are at the right place.

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Here I listed many differences between both platforms, Pros, Cons, and Conclusion, for WordPress-com and WordPress-org.

WordPress.org is a 100% FREE, open source software and content management system (CMS). And based on PHP and MySQL. So, at least you need a web hosting, domain name and of cause need to install it on the web server.

On the other hand, WordPress.com is a blogging platform that is owned and hosted by Automattic but not open source software, and it has both plans FREE and PAID.

Here I compare WordPress.org with WordPress.com Free Plan in details.

As you know, WordPress.org is the Self-hosted Version of WordPress, so you need to buy web hosting and domain name for installing it on the web server.

WordPress.org Pros

Many benefits and advantages of using it, below I listed few of them:

  • Custom Domain- You will use your TLD extension (like .com, .net, etc.) on your website/blog, that looks more professional.
  • Complete Control- WordPress installed on your web server. So, you get all control on your websites like the design, customization, optimization, and monetization.
  • A lot of Themes and Plugins- Thousands of themes and more than 50000 plugins available on WordPress Directory to choose.

WordPress.org Cons

So, many benefits of using it, but few of them cons too:

  • You need to pays and maintain for hosting and Domain. However, you can buy best web hosting and domain name under $100, easily.
  • Backup and Security- it will installed on your web server, that means you need to maintain your site(s). However, choose the best web hosting and install a few best plugins and done.

Tip: Backup and security are essential for every or any websites, and web hosting plays major roles in protection. So, choose the web hosting carefully.

I would recommend SiteGround and Bluehost.

SiteGround Review Here

WordPress.com Pros

Here I listed benefits of using WordPress fully hosted version.

  • Easy to Start- No need to install them on the web server and maintain domain.
  • Free to Use- You no need to pay anything for hosting and domain (for the basic plan up to 3GB free disk space).
  • Backup and Security- It is hosted by Automattic that mean, backup and security maintained by them.

WordPress.com Cons

Here I listed disadvantage of WordPress.com, it’s important too.

  • Subdomain- Here, you will get a subdomain like yoursite.wordpress.com. If you want a custom domain name, then you need to upgrade to a paid plan.
  • Less control- You will not monetize your website.
  • Limited Customization- Customization is not so easy you will get limited customization.

I thought

If you are new to blogging, and just want to start blogging at all. And not want to pay anything for web hosting and domain name. Then, you can begin with WordPress.com, because their basic plan is free. When you realize to need a custom domain, customization or monetization then migrate your site later.

If you are serious about blogging and want to complete control on your blog and ready to pays for hosting & domain name, then WordPress self-hosted version is the best option for you.
